I think they (NASA and Backblaze) probably mean
Earth’s hottest, on average, ACROSS THE PLANET not
just the USA or a single sample point for a state. Also if you check on
Wikipedia there are a couple dozen new temperature records attributed to
2023 (none in the US). I suspect that there might have been a lot of
high-temperature records at data centers as well (even if there has been
a higher temperature in that state before).

You are the industry best (only?) when it comes to reporting of this stuff in so much detail. Very interested to see you’ve gone big with the WD 22TB Ultrastars. I do 4k video editing so having plenty of space is important as I store all my completed projects in a few formats.

I’m a WD convert and currently run a few 14TB Ultrastars, 18TB Golds and a 20TB Gold along with some decade old WDs like 1TB Raptor and 4TB blacks. They’ve served me loyally. Time is coming when the 22TBs will replace my old ones so will be watching with much interest how they go for you.

My understanding is that the next WD release, the 24TB (Gold and U/star), will be the largest they’ll be able to make in CMR format so that may indeed be the one to have in future years.
P.S. Given that they’re virtually identical, was there a particular reason you went for Ultrastars instead of Golds?

Ask Siri on your iPhone what the hottest recorded temperature is in your state. I bet Gavin Schmidt a dollar it won’t be 2023.

While i use Backblaze for my personal use, i work in IT and numbers like these are not easy to come by from the market.

Keep up the good work and kudos for providing such info :)
