We have purchased some Dell R740xd2 in mid 2020 and they are filled with these 14TB Seagates. They waited until the 1 year disk warranty is up, and promptly started dying like flies. I had 4% of HDDs die in past 1 month, which is crazy number annualized…
For some reason Dell gave us Toshibas in the rear slots, and they don’t blink and work flawlessly.

It might save more rack space as long as available in bulk. But will be good to start with single pod. Also can you please add a metrics with HDD tech being used in these and Is CMR/SMR/HAMR/MAMR as these are upcoming technology for high capacity drives.

Last year i was disappointed with the 8TB WD i chucked from Best Buy easystore usb drives. Lots of them would not stay in a raid5 array even with careful vibration isolation. I always had successful raid5 before, going back to the first one (4 x 320 GB in a Dell workstation). So this year i went for 3 x 18 TB Toshiba MG09ACA18TE and 3 Exos.ST18000NM000J on an AsRock B550M PRO4 mobo with a Ryzen 5600G running server 2019 STD. I get zero read error and zero seek error in the 3 Toshiba’s SMART and an incredibly high number of both in the 3 Exos. Does anyone at Backblaze know by how much the seek errors slow down the Exos drives and why Seagate, whatever the product line. seems to be unable to make error-free drives as other manufacturers do?
