you can have games and the operating system windows
or you have something like the mayan calendar and various tech age calculations on Earth running on Kali linux
not used for hacking bank accounts:)
surely,0.1 years average life for the troublesome 6 TB Western Digital Drive is troubling indeed
but…life goes on
you should buy only capacities with come at powers of 2:)))

I have a couple of questions: 1. Do you consider the power requirements of the different hard drives? For example, the HGST (Hitachi) drives take as much power at rest as the Western Digital Red drives use in use. This has a cost impact as well and thus may make the Western Digital drives the bargain choice not to mention the additional benefits of running drives that can be expected to run cooler and the resulting decline in cooling costs. 2. Seagate claims a given number of “Power-on hours” for their drives and the number seems quite low to me for drives used in a NAS setting. This seems to imply that while short term failure rates may be acceptable, long term failure may be premature as compared to other alternatives. Do you have any sense of the relevance of this issue?

Finally, would you mind if I post an excerpt of this on my blog with a link to this page and proper attribution to BackBlaze? I’d also like to post it on some of the photographer specific websites that I use if that’s ok.

If you need DoL ETA 750 Part B too , here’s http://goo.gl/Ey3PXy

Considering the fact that these drives are not ment to run 24/7, they are working quite good.

They talked about this some other place, basically, enterprise class drives would make it hard to turn a profit in their business, and since their setup can handle drive failures without loosing data, the failure rates of non-enterprise drives were less costly than paying the price of enterprise class drives.

I have Samsung drives, where not a single one failed and they’re going on 10 years old…
None of my HGST Touro (external Deskstars) drives failed either, but they’re less than 5 years old.
