Any truth to this?

It would be also great to publish results of analogical analysis with the most recent data that you have and link it here, so that the users can see if Western Digital is still so good. Thanks!

I have lowered my opinion of Toshiba drives recently, and now I prefer Hitachi, and only the professional series of Western Digital (5 years warranty) My reasons are mainly due to Toshiba’s refusal to deal with Canadian customers in a professional and reliable manner.

Agree with the Intel SSDs, for mechanical drives and NAS implementation I use either Hitachi or Toshiba, so far both Hitachi and Toshiba mechanical drives are solid.

This is the status quo now. Almost all companies pull this crap, it’s the result of going public. Publicly traded corporations must keep showing ever growing profit margins every single year. More, more, more – it’s never enough. How can they keep making more profit every single year indefinitely?
Keep raising prices and cutting costs any way possible. Squeeze the supplier, abuse your workers, cut benefits, get cheaper labor, outsource everything to cheaper countries with no minimum wage or human rights laws, lobby politicians to destroy all regulations so you don’t have to pay to clean up your messes or treat others with respect, use cheaper parts, cut corners, skip testing. Shift money away from R&D and instead of innovating with better products, spend it on the best advertising firms to divide two good products into 12 bad niche products to market to different audiences, spend it on PR firms to push deceptive press releases far and wide and defend yourself against public attacks, and spend it on armies of lawyers to swallow competitors, consolidate the market so you can rake in more money without creating a good product, and to sue and countersue outspoken critics, patent holders, union organizers, employees you’ve hurt, communities you’ve destroyed, and governments whose laws you’ve broken.
Ah, capitalism. :-)

HGST = Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. HGST is the official name, search on Amazon or Newegg and you will see many of them. They tend to run a bit more expensive, as the post says, but in my opinion totally worth it for the improved reliability and peace of mind.
